Borsos, Miklós Lighea torso
Description
The serpentine sculpture “Ligeia Torso” exemplifies Miklós Borsos’s purified formal language, which balances a tendency toward abstraction with classical roots. The slender form, tapering upwards, appears as a closed, unified volume, interrupted only by a subtle vertical slit. This restrained gesture simultaneously alludes to the female body and its abstract, symbolic presence, while reducing the traditional notion of the torso to its essential minimum.
The smoothly polished surface and the natural greenish tones of the serpentine create a sensitive play of light, gently following the curves of the form and enhancing the sculpture’s meditative character. The tension between compact mass and delicate opening evokes a sense of inner life and organic growth.
The title refers to Ligeia from Greek mythology, yet Borsos avoids a narrative approach: the sculpture can rather be understood as a timeless, distilled essence of the feminine principle in pure form.
